Building Trades Course Outline and Management Plan
Building Trades is divided into 4 sections with each one receiving a quarter grade. The purpose of this is to facility the changing of the class if needed because of scheduling conflicts, job-site safety and behavioral issues. Each year a house is constructed on the school grounds and auctioned off. The following is a breakdown of the learning outcomes for each of the sections. Building Trades I 1. Lay-out of walls, floor trusses, and roof trusses. 2. Installation of floor decking, wall and roof sheathing. 3. Bracing and strong-back requirements from designer and IBC code. 4. Construction of the truss flooring system from designer plans. 5. Construction of walls with window and door rough openings. 6. Construction of the roof system and bracing, 7. Weather wrapping the exterior. 8. Roof underlayment requirements and shingling of the roof. Building Trades II 1. Soffit construction and installation 2. Window opening preparation 3. Installation of windows and doors. 4. Interior wall layout and construction. 5. Exterior Siding preparation and installation. 6. Heating and cooling systems. 7. Wall insulation, wrapping, and sealing per IBC code. Building Trades III 1. Electrical systems and code requirements 2. Plumbing systems and requirements 3. Ceiling drywall installation 4. Ceiling blow-in insulation and documentation requirements 5. Planning and installation of phone and cable lines in the house. 6. Installation of interior wall drywall. Building Trades IV 1. Taping, mudding, sanding and texturing of the drywall. 2. Priming and painting of interior wall/ceiling surfaces. 3. Staining, varnishing, and installing interior doors. 4. Staining, varnishing, and installing interior trim. 5. Finish clean-up of house prior to auction. 6. Attending school auction and being part of the final transfer of the house to the new owner. Grading: Based on the individual and assigned crews work effort and quality. Testing of learned applications and terminology. The breakdown of the grading is as follows: Individual Work =30% Crew Work =50% Testing =20% The grading for the class is based on testing of terms and methods, hands-on demonstration of lay-out methods, and work participation on the assigned work project. Testing = 40% Demonstration = 30% Work on Project =30% |
Discipline Plan for Building Trades
Classroom Rules 1. Safety is First and Most Important 2. Safety Glasses will be worn at all times during lab classes. 3. Enter the room, go directly to your seats, check board for your crew assignment. 4. Use equipment only if you have been trained on it. All equipment will be brought back to the school and secured. 5. Respect will be shown to others. ( Inappropriate language, touching,and/or disrespect will not be tolerated) We will not have the job site mentally of hooting or yelling at passer-bys or other students. 6. Raise your hand if you have a question and I will acknowledge you as soon as I have finished what I am doing. 7. The teacher excuses the class not the bell, the job site will be cleaned every day before returning to the school. 8. There will be no breaks to the school water, pop, and others items will be brought to class at the beginning of the sixth hour. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS 1. Verbal Warning (if equipment related you will not use the equipment the remainder of the hour and /or be referred to the office) 2. Verbal Warning with possible parent contact 3. Written Warning and referrral to office. 4. Written Warning and detention or suspension from class 5. Written Warning, parent conference and removal from the class. (Each of the written warnings will involve parental contact) Tardiness You will arrive in class on time and be seated. The policies in the school handbook will be followed 3 tardies will result in 1 hour of detention and 1 unexcused absent day from class. Text and Materials Handouts provided by the State of Minnesota and different manufacturers regarding proper installation of materials, codes, weatherization, and permit calculations are used to instruct the students in proper/required applications.
